Hunslet RLFC are looking forward to hosting a special night in the Phoenix Bar on Wednesday 28th November (from 7pm) when the novel “The Gigante” is launched by Leeds author Robert Endeacott.

The novel is a fictionalisation of the world-great footballer John Charles in 1957, when  he left Leeds United to join Italian giants Juventus for a record fee. The story also covers his first season for Juventus as well as the personal experiences of John and wife Peggy and their three young sons, newcomers in a strange new land.

Signed copies of the book will be available on the evening for only £10 (normal price £12) and will be hosted by BBC Radio Leeds presenter Adam Pope with special guests associated with Leeds United also expected to be in attendance. John’s son Mel Charles will be attending too.

Paul Taylor, Chief Commercial Officer of Hunslet R LFC said “We are thrilled to be hosting this event on Wednesday in the Phoenix Bar at the aptly named John Charles Sports Centre.

“We are expecting a big turnout for the launch of this special book by Robert.

“I’m a huge football fan with a particular interest in Italian football and this really caught my imagination, John Charles was a real pioneer joining Juventus and it’s a fascinating story.”
