Hunslet RLFC are delighted to announce that Red Ladder who are working with Freedom Studios will bring their Stage Premiere of Black Teeth and a Brilliant Smile to the Phoenix Suite on Friday 28th June.

This is the sixth time that Red Ladder have visited Hunslet RLFC and Chris Lloyd, Red Ladder Producer said “The relationship between Red Ladder and Hunslet RLFC goes back five years and we are thrilled to return with a brand new play which will be our sixth Theatre Show in the Phoenix Suite.

“From Plays about legendary Rugby League commentator Eddie Waring (Playing The Joker) to the turbulent 44 day reign of Brian Clough at Leeds United (The Damned United) to the intimate drama of friendship between two lifelong friends (When We Were Brothers), Hunslet RLFC have always managed to generate large and appreciative audiences. Long may it continue!

Adelle Stripe’s compelling novel recounting the brief and defiant life of the celebrated playwright Andrea Dunbar is brought to life in a new play, adapted by award-winning screenwriter Lisa Holdsworth (Ackley Bridge, Waterloo Road and Call the Midwife).

Andrea Dunbar, acclaimed writer of Rita, Sue and Bob Too, Mum, Sister, Best Friend, is struggling with her latest work. Her aching head is full of voices, stories from her past which have to be heard. Andrea Dunbar was raised on the Buttershaw council estate in Bradford. Her first play, The Arbor, premiered at the Royal Court in London when she was just 18, and originated as a CSE English assignment. She was, according to one tabloid newspaper at the time, ‘a genius straight from the slums’.

Rita, Sue and Bob Too (1982) was also a hit at the Royal Court and was subsequently filmed by the director Alan Clarke. Dunbar wrote one more play, Shirley, and died of a brain haemorrhage in 1990 aged only 29.

A fictionalised account of the life of Andrea Dunbar, Black Teeth and a Brilliant Smile isperformed by an all-female cast: Emily Spowage (Andrea Dunbar); Lucy Hird (the younger Andrea Dunbar), Claire- Marie Seddon (Eileen/Sophie/cast); Balvinder Sopal (Mo/Patsy/cast); and Laura Lindsay (Alma/Liane/cast.) It is directed by Kash Arshad (Airplays, Leeds Playhouse and Memories of Partition, Royal Exchange).

Author Adelle Stripe said “I’m delighted that Freedom Studios has adapted my novel, transforming Andrea Dunbar’s story from the page to stage. As one of Yorkshire’s greatest female writers, Andrea’s legacy is finally being recognised and this new production is finally bringing Andrea back home.”

Playwright Lisa Holdsworth adds: “This new Play is not only a celebration of the life, work and unique spirit of Andrea Dunbar, but also of Adelle Stripe’s extraordinary book which brings out Andrea’s humour and bravery.”
