On Valentine’s Day head coach Barry Eaton, ex-players and members of the community team visited our chosen charity, the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) to find out more about the research work they undertake.

Recently honoured Professor Dame Pamela Shaw welcomed the team and gave a presentation on the formation of the Institute, the research they carry out and the funding efforts that enable the Institute to operate. This was followed by a tour of the various laboratories and an insight into the ground breaking techniques they practise.

Motor neuron disease, despite being recognized as one of the cruellest illnesses, receives relatively little government funding compared to other diseases. This means private funding is essential to ensure the latest developments in both equipment and techniques are available to the dedicated team of researchers.

This disease is close to the hearts of everyone at the club as it has taken the lives of ex-players Mark Burgess and Grabsie Wilson, as well Shaun Keane, the son of former player Stuart.

Stuart is the driving force behind a concerted fundraising effort to raise £105,000 for a Live Cell Imaging System. To date £32,000 has been raised with the Hunslet family contributing £4,550 to this total from the “Grabsie” Wilson Presentation Awards and the recent Legends Evening in the Phoenix.

Future fundraising events are planned throughout the season by both the Club and the Ex-Parkside Players Association. Please look out for further details.

The Club would like to thank Professor Dame Pamela Shaw and her team for a very informative and enjoyable visit.  Despite the seriousness of the subject a great time was had by all with Harry taking full advantage of romantic day and proving a big hit with the ladies at the Institute.

Anyone requiring further information on the charity can contact Stuart on 07737 534918 or email stuartkeane@talktalk.net.
